Knowing that you have the right equipment can help boost your home entertainment setup. When it comes to choosing between an amplifier and a receiver, many newcomers to AV technology may require some additional context to understand what will best suit their system.

Should you buy an amplifier or a receiver? If you only need to amplify audio from a playback device (TV, smartphone, turntable, etc.), then a “regular” integrated amplifier is the unit to purchase. If you need amplification along with a radio tuner and video functionality, then an AV receiver is the unit to buy.

In this article, we'll break down amplifiers and receivers in greater detail to give you the information you need to make an informed purchasing decision.

Amplifiers Vs. Receivers

It is best for those seeking to enhance their home system’s sound quality to understand better what a receiver and an amplifier actually do. Since there's significant overlap in the purpose of the units, it is best to learn the differences between them so that you can complete the home theatre system of your dreams.

What Is An Amplifier?

Amplifiers are designed to function as standalone devices or as components or circuits within a device. An amplifier is an electronic device that gives an incoming audio signal a boost in level.

There are numerous examples of amplifiers in audio, though when we're discussing home audio systems, we're almost always discussing integrated amplifiers.

Integrated amplifiers have both a preamplifier and a power amplifier.

Preamplifiers bring low-level signals up to line level, while power amplifiers bring line level signals up to speaker level.

In terms of “low-level” signals, we're typically concerned with phono level outputs from turntables and record players. An integrated amplifier's preamp (or a standalone preamp) will boost this signal to line level.

Most recorded audio signals are considered “line level”. This includes analog and digital sources. Line level signals are not strong enough to drive loudspeakers. An integrated amplifier's power amp (or a standalone power amp) will amplify the signal strength in order to provide the speakers with sufficient levels so that the loudspeaker drivers can effectively produce sound.

Related article: Are Audio Amplifiers Analog Or Digital Devices?

So, if you're only concerned with amplifying audio and do not plan on ever needing video functionality or a radio tuner, an amplifier is a worthy investment.

Furthermore, if you aren't running phono level signals, you can get away with a power amplifier rather than an integrated amplifier to save on costs.

Note that an amplifier is a single unit. If you purchase one with proper inputs and outputs, you can decide later whether you want to connect a radio tuner, preamp, etc., to the system. Being able to mix and match like this can give greater control over unit selection and make for easier upgrades at the expense of space and higher price points.

What Is A Receiver?

A receiver is effectively an amplifier with additional controls, often including video, remote control, and a radio tuner. It is one of the most fundamental parts of any entertainment system, performing a range of essential tasks that connect each piece of your sound system together.

With the capacity to host numerous devices such as game consoles, home video players, projectors, TVs, and speakers, a good receiver makes every device in your system functional and easy to use.

Have you ever experienced manually switching cables as you toggle through your various devices? If so, you'll likely enjoy having a receiver that saves you the time and effort of reaching for cables at the back of your player only to retrace your steps when you decide to switch devices back.

By enabling users to automatically switch speaker modes to provide them with an awesome surround sound experience, receivers come in extremely handy as they offer great control over an audio system’s numerous options.

With the capacity to accommodate most of your multi-media devices, receivers offer instant advantages to your sound system by effortlessly advancing its sound and performance.

Receivers handle the sound that comes from the various consoles and connected devices, intricately advancing and intensifying their quality to allow each tonal element to feel and sound better.

If you want audio-video and radio functionality in a single unit that also includes an amplifier, then a receiver is the choice for you.

While dedicated amplifiers tend to offer better sound quality-to-price ratios, there's no debating the advantages of video and radio functionality. So, if you're at all concerned with multi-media, consider a single receiver unit over having to connect multiple devices together for your AV needs.

So, Should I Buy An Amplifier Or Receiver?

Let's break down the reasons why you'd want to buy either an amplifier or a receiver.

Reasons why you should buy an amplifier rather than a receiver:

You're not concerned with radio, video, or other functions in a single unit.

You want the best audio quality to price ratio.

You're interested in the modularity of individual units and have space for them.

You'd rather upgrade individual components as necessary than have to replace an entire receiver unit.

Once you've decided that an amplifier is the right choice for your system, there are more factors to consider. That's why I put together The Ultimate Power Amplifier Buyer’s Guide

Reasons why you should buy a receiver rather than an amplifier:

You want audio, radio, video, or other functions in a single unit.

You like the simplicity of a single unit.

You have limited space.

If you've decided that a receiver is the right choice for your system, there are also more factors to consider. That's why I put together The Ultimate AV Receiver/Amplifier Buyer’s Guide.

Conclusion

Often the much cheaper and more conducive option for a sound system set-up, a receiver is the obvious choice for those who aim to impress during movie and game nights.

Although a high-quality amplifier may hold users back considerably in terms of functionality, they are the best choice for audio quality.

What Is Your AV Receiver/Amplifier Budget?

The first thing to consider when making any purchase is your budget. Money can be a touchy subject for some, so I'll keep this section brief.

I would never advise anyone to overspend on any audio equipment. Know what you can realistically afford, and do your best to stay within those limitations, whatever they may be.

AV receivers/amplifiers, like many audio devices, range significantly in price. The market is rather large, and so there should be a good selection for any budget.

Note that some retailers offer payment plans, which could be an option.

Consider the cost-to-benefit ratio of the purchase of the AV receiver/amplifier. For example, if the receiver/amp is needed for business, perhaps stretching the budget is more appropriate. If, on the other hand, you don't plan on making money with the receiver/amp, perhaps a more conservative budget is appropriate.

Also, consider any additional accessories or upkeep that may be required for your AV receiver/amplifier.

Only you can determine your budget. All I'm here to say is that you should consider it.

Related My New Microphone article:
• How Much Do Audio Amplifiers Cost? (With Pricing Examples)

AV Receiver/Amplifier Number Of Audio Channels

As the central piece of your home theatre or entertainment system, it's important that your AV receiver will be able to connect to all your devices. Additionally, it should offer as many, if not more, channels as your current speaker setup.

When selecting an AVR to suit our needs, the number of audio channels is critical to understanding how the unit will fit into the larger system.

Let's begin with the number of audio channels and quickly discuss the difference between a stereo receiver and an AV receiver.

A stereo receiver will contain a stereo amplifier or two monoblock amplifiers to drive a stereo pair of speakers (left and right channels). The receivers are different from stereo-integrated or power amplifiers by the fact that they offer radio tuners.

So stereo receivers have 2 channels.

On the other hand, AV receivers processed both audio and video (hence the name “AV” receiver). In addition to video capabilities, these receivers generally have more than two audio channels to accommodate subwoofers and surround sound speaker setups.

AV receivers will have varying numbers of channels, often given as “X.Y” specifications. For example, an AV receiver could have 5.2 channels or 7.1 channels. What does this mean?

The first number, “X,” tells us how many full-range speaker channels the receiver offers. The second number, “Y,” tells us how many independent subwoofer channels there are.

In our examples above, the 5.2 receiver will have five full-range speaker outputs and two subwoofer channels. The 7.1 receiver will have seven full-range speaker outputs and one subwoofer channel.

By that logic, an AV receiver with stereo plus subwoofer outputs would be considered 2.1.

Nowadays, there are plenty of different standards with varying numbers of channels. As an example, NHK Science & Technical Research Laboratories has developed Ultra High Definition Television, which requires a surround sound component of 22.2.

When set up properly, more channels will offer greater immersive results. However, these extra channels (and the speakers they drive) require larger investments and space.

Going big is fine if you have the money and a dedicated theatre room, but it may be overkill for a basement room with limited space and no acoustic treatment.

AV Receiver I/O

Let's move beyond the number of channels (speaker outputs) into our discussion on the general input/output specifications of audio-video receivers.

Keeping to audio-only I/O, we should be aware of the following potential inputs and outputs:

Pre outputs: pre outputs generally mimic the speaker outputs in number but bypass the internal power amplifiers of the AV receiver, thereby outputting lower-level signals. Using pre outputs, we can send the audio outputs to their own dedicated external power amplifiers rather than using the AVR's amps.

Phono inputs: phono inputs are designed to accept low-level phono signals from turntables and bring them up to line level for use within the receiver and beyond.

Headphone outputs: headphone outputs output analog audio to drive headphones effectively.

Radio tuner inputs: whether AM or FM, these radio receivers will pick up radio signals and decode them into audio for the AVR to use.

Analog audio inputs: these inputs generally come in stereo coaxial pairs. Each pair is generally assigned to its own source, which can be chosen within the AVR.

Digital audio inputs: these inputs generally come in stereo coaxial or optical pairs. Each pair is generally assigned to its own source, which can be chosen within the AVR.

Setup mic input: some AVRs come with sound calibration technology that effectively measures the acoustics of a room and adjusts outputs accordingly. These systems feature a microphone, which will have its own audio input.

Now let's discuss the I/O that covers both audio and video:

Composite video I/O: this is a relatively outdated format for analog connections featuring one yellow coaxial/RCA connector for video and red and white coaxial/RCA connectors for audio.

Component (YPbPr) video I/O: this is another outdated analog format. The red and white coaxial/RCA connectors carry audio, but the video is divided into three components: one for luma (brightness) and two for colour information.

USB: USB can carry both compressed and uncompressed video and audio digitally.

HDMI: HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is perhaps the most popular AV I/O on AV receivers. It transmits high-definition uncompressed video data and compressed or uncompressed digital audio data between HDMI-compliant devices.

Finally, we'll wrap up this section with the extra non-AV I/O possibilities:

Trigger out: these outputs will effectively trigger other devices in the AV system to turn on/off as the AVR is turned on/off.

Remote control I/O: remote controls work wirelessly via infrared wireless technology. The remote control I/O will allow different remotes to communicate with the AVR.

RS-232: this I/O allows for serial communication transmission of data between the AVR and a computer.

Network: this I/O relays data from the AVR to a larger network mainframe and can effectively connect the AVR to the internet and the streaming services on the internet.

Antenna inputs: antennae inputs help with the transmission of wireless information, whether it's for radio, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi.

Power I/O: all AVRs need power to work and will have a power connection. Some AVRs will also have power outputs for USB devices and the like.

Back to the Table Of Contents.

Wired & Wireless Connectivity

Continuing from the I/O section, we should understand the wired and wireless connectivity options of our perspective AVRs.

As the centre of an entertainment system, the AVR will connect to plenty of different devices. For stationary devices such as the television and speakers, wired connections may be optimal. They're generally more stable than wireless connectivity and offer a truer signal transfer with the encoding and decoding necessary for wireless signal transmission.

Built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and AM/FM radio are typical wireless connections worth looking into with your next AVR purchase. The remote control is also worth considering, though this technology, like AM/FM radio, is commonplace with AV receivers today.

With Wi-Fi, we can access many proprietary wireless communication protocols, including Apple's AirPlay, Denon's HEOS, DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance), Google's Chromecast, and Spotify's Connect3.

Bluetooth connectivity allows us to pair the AVR with any devices that also offer Bluetooth connectivity, with specifications defaulting to the lowest version of Bluetooth between the paired devices (backward compatibility).

Back to the Table Of Contents.

AV Receiver/Amplifier Power Specification

As discussed previously, AV receivers also act as power amplifiers that effectively drive the speakers they connect to. So, when choosing an AVR, we must ask ourselves how much power (how many watts) we need per channel and in total.

Unfortunately, power/wattage specifications are often deceiving, especially when we're trying to figure out how much power is available per channel.

Do your research to determine how much power is available per channel when all channels connect to speakers.

Pay attention to the rated nominal impedance of the speakers in question and the frequency response at which the specification holds true (ideally 20-20,000 Hz).

Also, look for total harmonic distortion ratings at max peak power.

Many specifications sheets will list the maximum peak power if only one or two channels are driven. As more channels are connected, less power will be available per channel.

Though most manufacturers won't give you the information you need regarding all channels driven, you may be able to find third-party tests that record the actual power ratings of higher-end AVRs. Check out soundandvision.com as a resource for such test results.

Having speakers with similar power handling ratings to the AVR's power output ratings will mean improved compatibility. Take note of the rated impedance of the AVR's power output and compare it to the speakers' rating input impedances. Amplifiers will deliver more power into lower impedance loads.

To learn more about speaker and amplifier impedance and how to match the two, check out the following My New Microphone articles:
• Why Do Speakers Need Amplifiers?
When it comes to measuring how much power you'll need. Consider the size of the room. Smaller rooms need less power, and the fewer people in the room, the less power is needed. Though far from standardized, I recommend the following loose power requirements for small rooms:

Under 500 square feet: 200 Watts RMS or less

Under 1,000 square feet: 800 Watts RMS or less

Under 2,000 square feet: 2,000 Watts RMS or less

Under 4,000 square feet: 4,000 Watts RMS or less

Calculating exactly how much power you need is rather complicated. Once we have our speakers and AVR matched, we can determine how loud the system will be in a certain listening environment by calculating the speakers' sensitivity, the power being sent to the speakers, and our distance from the speakers.

For example, let's consider the following illustration to understand the relationship between amplifier power, speaker sensitivity, distance and sound pressure level.

In the illustration below, we'll use the examples of Speaker A (sensitivity rating of 84 dB SPL @ 1W/1m) and Speaker C (sensitivity rating of 90 dB SPL @ 1W/1m):

Amplifier Power Vs. Speaker Sensitivity Vs. Distance

Take this information for a single speaker and understand that every speaker added (assuming equal build, distance from the listener, and output) will double the sound intensity, causing an increase of 3 dB SPL at the listener's position.

Furthermore, consider the following table of safe listening time limits at various decibel SPL levels (A-weighted) as defined by the NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) and the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration:

Beyond the specs of the AVR and its speakers, consider the method by which the AVR speaker outputs will connect to the speakers.

The AVR outputs may very well take bare speaker wire, while the speakers may have pin, spade or banana connectors. It's also worth looking into the proper speaker wire gauge for your specific situation. This has more to do with the speakers, but it's definitely a consideration to make when choosing your AV receiver.

Be aware of the audio formats on the market at the time of your purchase, and ensure the AVR is compatible with those you plan on using.

DTS and Dolby are at the forefront of new multichannel audio technologies, so look out for AVRs that have these formats.

Find out which formats you're interested in using and find a compatible AVR. Conversely, read through the AVR specs to see which audio formats you may be interested in incorporating into your system once you buy that AVR.

Tuner Section

With so many options for entertainment with modern technology, it can be easy to overlook the old-school radio. That being said, looking into the radio tuner section is worth the extra time to ensure it's a good fit.

Since radio technology has been around for so long, it's pretty much been perfected. Therefore, the vast majority of AVRs will have more than adequate tuner sections.

Futureproofing The AV Receiver/Amplifier

With technological developments happening faster and faster, it can be difficult to keep up in the AV world.

While audio developments have a lot to do with new and improved surround sound formats, the realm of digital video is rapidly changing.

So, when choosing an AV receiver, it's important to consider the idea of futureproofing to ensure the AVR we choose today is not obsolete a year or even a few months from now.

Here are some tips for futureproofing your next AV receiver:

Get an AVR with enough channels for now and in the future. You may be acquiring more speakers.

Opt for more inputs and output than you need (especially HDMI). You may be acquiring more equipment in the future.

Look for an AVR with all the most up-to-date video formats and resolutions. These are consistently improving, so choosing an AVR with up-to-date formats will keep it relevant for longer.

I made a point here to offer “evergreen” advice. Do your due diligence to find out what the most up-to-date AV technologies are today before choosing your AV receiver!

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) has gained popularity worldwide because it is an effective means of carrying video. This article will explain how HDMI is used for communication in digital networks and whether it can carry audio signals.

Does HDMI carry audio signals? HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) carries both audio and video. As a multimedia interface, HDMI transmits high-definition uncompressed video data and compressed or uncompressed digital audio data between HDMI-compliant devices.

In this article, we'll focus the discussion on HDMI and how it carries audio signals.

What Does HDMI Carry?

Let's begin with the basics. HDMI can carry both audio and video signals. It is known for transmitting high-quality digital video signals and as a digital replacement for older analog video standards. More specifically, HDMI carries uncompressed video.

HDMI is popular for presentations at work or providing news feeds throughout a small area. HDMI is also used for entertainment purposes, so you'll find HDMI cables attached to your television, allowing you to watch movies or enjoy live streaming of music events.

In addition to digital video, HDMI will effectively carry digital audio (compressed or uncompressed) through the same cable. This allows you to have a more organized look in your personal space or when you're using digital gear at any event.

The versatility of HDMI cables makes it easy to connect your MacBook to another device to play music. You could also connect your television to your PC and enjoy audio files saved on the hard drive. In cases where two devices cannot be connected directly via HDMI, an adapter can often be used to facilitate the transmission of audio signals from one to the other.

A Brief Discussion On The Differences Between Digital And Analog Audio

It's important to reiterate that HDMI does not carry analog audio. Rather, it transfers digital audio. Let's briefly discuss the differences.

First, I'll state the difference between sound and audio. Sound is mechanical wave energy (longitudinal sound waves) that propagate through a medium, causing variations in pressure within the medium. Audio is made of electrical energy (analog or digital signals) that represents sound electrically.

For more information on the differences between sound and audio, check out my article What Is The Difference Between Sound And Audio?

So, audio is a representation of sound that can be stored and played back. Storage, recording and editing/mixing can all be done digitally or in the analog realm.

Analog audio is sound stored, recorded, transferred or played back via electrical, magnetic or mechanical means. Analog audio signals are alternating currents of electrical energy and are regularly converted from one form of energy to another. Take the following examples:

A vinyl record is audio stored mechanically in grooves. A phonograph needle/stylus moves within the grooves, and the attached cartridge converts the mechanical movement into electrical (analog) audio signals.

An audio tape is audio stored magnetically on magnetic tape. As the tape runs across the playhead, the electromagnetic imprint of the tape is read and converted into, once again, electrical (analog) audio signals.

The waveforms of analog audio are continuous representations of sound.

Digital audio, as we could assume, is made of digital data (binary data). The audio waveform, rather than being continuous, is presented as discrete amplitudes (defined by the bit depth of the digital resolution) at distinct intervals (defined by the sample rate or samples per second).

Analog audio tends to degrade when stored and certainly as it's reproduced. Analog audio signals also suffer from degradation as they travel through cable and audio devices.

Digital audio files can be duplicated infinite times without degradation and can easily be transmitted via streaming services, Bluetooth, HDMI and more.

Analog signals are required for playback, however. Digital signals will not drive headphones or speakers. Only analog signals can do that. Therefore, there are plenty of digital-to-analog converters (and analog-to-digital converters) in audio devices.

So, to wrap up this brief discussion, HDMI carries digital audio, which is easy to transmit. HDMI cables, then, either work or don't. They will not affect the audio signal quality since they only transmit digital information.

However, that is not to say that the DAC necessary for playback (or the playback system itself) won't affect the quality of the audio.

HDMI Audio Specifications

The baseline audio format for HDMI is stereo (uncompressed) PCM. If a device is to send or receive digital audio via HDMI, it must have this format or “greater”.

Other formats are, of course, supported. Here is a list of audio signal formats supported by the HDMI protocol:

LPCM

Dolby Digital

DTS

DVD-Audio

Dolby Digital Plus

Dolby TrueHD

DTS-HD High-Resolution Audio

DTS-HD Master Audio

MPCM

DSD

DST

Dolby Atmos

DTS:X

HDMI (version 2.0 and above) allows up to 32 channels of uncompressed audio at the following bit depths:

16-bit

20-bit

24-bit

The 32 channels of uncompressed audio can have the following sample rates:

32 kHz

44.1 kHz

48 kHz

88.2 kHz

96 kHz

176.4 kHz

192 kHz

In addition to supporting Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and other superb digital audio formats, HDMI also supports an audio return channel, which can essentially send audio information back and forth from your TV tuner to your receiver.

This automatically equalizes audio and video processing delays between different devices so the picture and sound stay in perfect sync.

With HDMI transmission of sound, you will experience less quality loss and enjoy theatre-quality experiences when playing music or enjoying the latest blockbuster film.

Compressed And Uncompressed Audio

HDMI can easily transmit both compressed and uncompressed audio. Audio files are often compressed to save space, allowing you to store several music files on your MacBook or other relatively small gear.

HDMI cables don't have a problem with compressed files.

HDMI actually performs better than component video cable when considering the quality of surround sound facilitated by it. Despite that, sometimes it may take a few adjustments before the sound is transmitted properly using HDMI when connected to your TV or computer.

Reduce Delays

When audio and video devices cannot communicate well, the result is often poor synchronization and a less-than-ideal experience.

With HDMI, you won't have to worry as much about delays due to the devices being different. Thanks largely to the return audio path, the audio-video sync won't slip out of sync due to the HDMI cable.

In terms of setup time (let's call it real-world delay), the simplicity of a single cable makes hooking up HDMI-compatible AV equipment super easy, thereby reducing the “delay” or time it takes to set up (and tear down) your systems.

Most gadgets nowadays are built to use HDMI. You can freely play audio with HDMI on all of these. As far as the future is concerned, it's likely that this means of transmission will be utilized for a while.

Using The Correct Settings

While HDMI works well with different types of devices, you'll always have to ensure that the settings are correct for each one that you're using.

Perhaps you're reading this article because you're not getting any audio transfer with your HDMI cable properly connected. The issues are likely with the devices themselves rather than the cable.

If your computer's settings aren't correct, you won't hear any sound. It's often not the cable's fault, and your device should be adjusted to fix the sound.

Ensuring the device settings are properly set will usually allow you to enjoy good sound quality with HDMI.

Of course, there are times when you're unable to hear the audio (or see video) because the HDMI cable that you're using could be faulty. In that case, you can simply change the cable to enjoy clear audio.

If you're using a cable box with your device, you'll usually need to flip a switch to indicate that you want sound sent out through the HDMI cable instead of some other attached cable.

Similarly, you'll need to change the audio settings on your computer to ensure sound is sent through the HDMI cable to the external device.

HDMI Vs Optical Cables

HDMI and optical cables both transmit digital audio, and you'll usually find one used to connect two digital devices. If you're using multi-channel audio, like Dolby Digital, you won't usually notice a difference in sound quality.

However, this seeming equity between HDMI and optical cables disappears when you're not using a multi-channel source. When high-resolution audio is available, HDMI is the preferred choice. It is designed for this type of situation and allows for a better listening experience than optical cables.

HDMI can be used with several high-resolution formats, including Blu-Ray. It can also transmit DTS HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD.

Some older devices do not support HDMI, so we won't benefit from the high-quality digital audio transfer. Additionally, if you're connecting an audio transmitter and loudspeakers within the system, HDMI is not usually necessary or even an option.

Although HDMI is very good at transferring audio, it's not always necessary to use it if you only plan to send audio and don't need to use video. Most pro audio and Hi-Fi equipment do not bother with HDMI, as there are plenty of other audio-specific connections on the market that work tremendously well.

As we go further into the digital age, webcams are becoming a necessary tool for many individuals for professional and recreational purposes. Aside from its video-related performances, many people begin to rely on a webcam's audio capabilities and features.

Do webcams have built-in microphones? Webcams come with built-in microphones. The microphones in webcams that you purchase separately from computers are built into the webcams. Laptops, phones, and tablets have a built-in webcam and microphones of their own.

The guide will highlight several top-quality webcams on the market that have exceptional audio capability. This includes the Logitech C920, Razer Kiyo Pro, Microsoft LifeCam HD 3000, Mevo Start, and the Logitech Brio. Additional information related to webcams will also be discussed.

Knowing The Built-In Microphones In Your Webcams

In most cases, when you purchase a webcam, the packaging will specify what kind and the number of built-in microphones it has. Most webcams have a single built-in microphone, while others have two built-in microphones for improved audio quality.

However, despite the type or number of built-in microphones you have, the majority of webcams on the market are barely above average in terms of performance. This is also true with the built-in microphones in other devices, including laptops.

The audio quality of microphones built into webcams will get the job done for the most part. However, they won't be good enough for professionals or any individual who requires top-of-the-line audio quality.

Therefore, many who need a higher-quality audio capability would most likely purchase their webcams and an external mic or headphones with mic capabilities.

With that being said, let's still consider a few examples of webcams with built-in microphones to get a sense of what's available on the market.

The People's Choice: Logitech C920

The Logitech C920 is considered one of the, if not the best, webcam on the market. Since its release in 2012, the Logitech C920 has been consistently ranked over its rival products.

Logitech C920

The Logitech C920 has two built-in microphones that are fitted on either side of the camera. The Logitech C920's audio capabilities and performance are considered above average for webcam standards due to the double microphones. Most webcams would only have a single-built-int microphone, so Logitech C920 has the advantage in webcam audio.

The Logitech C920 is still the best overall achiever across the board for its reliability, cost, quality, and overall performance. The Logitech C920 is currently priced at approximately $79.99. Below are the specifications of the Logitech C920 and why it makes it incredibly popular:

1080p HD Resolution

Supports 720p/60FPS Streaming Video

Background Removal Features

Low-Light Correction Capabilities

With top-quality features and specifications at an affordable price, the Logitech C920 webcam will likely remain a top-rank webcam in the market for a while.

The Professional: Razer Kiyo Pro

Another popular choice for high-quality webcams is the Razer Kiyo Pro, the Razer Kiyo's “older sibling” and the latest addition to the Razer's webcam family. Just like its webcam counterparts on the market, the Razer Kiyo Pro has an omnidirectional microphone.

Based on several reviews, its built-in microphone performs on a standard level.

Razer Kiyo Pro

Compared to the top-tanked Logitech C920, the Razer Kiyo Pro does not come cheap. However, the Razer Kiya Pro reportedly delivers an overall performance that is worth its price.

There are several reasons that the Razer Kiyo Pro is priced significantly higher than its other counterparts and ranked as one of the most popular webcams out there. Currently, the Razer Kriyo Pro is priced at $199.99. Below are the advantages of owning the Razer Kiya Pro:

Incredible Resolution of 60FPS 1080P

Ring Light with Smart Exposure, Focus, and Easily-Adjustable

Built-In Tripod Mount

High Definition Image with Great Contrast

Detachable Cable

Using the Razer Kiyo Pro while live streaming, it also has the feature to choose between three fields of view for different scenes.

Further, you can also select a very clean and smooth 1080p 60FPS or an “HDR mode” for high-resolution and improved video quality during video call sessions.

The Affordable: Microsoft LifeCam HD-3000

The Microsoft LifeCam HD-3000 is considered one of the most popular webcams out there. This is true primarily because of its incredibly affordable price compared to the other webcams in the market.

Microsoft LifeCam HD-3000

Although, a webcam's quality will usually depend on the price you pay. Allegedly, the Microsoft LifeCam HD 3000’s mic does not have the best audio system. Some complain that the webcam’s built-in mic would sometimes make disruptive noises, such as:

Echoes/latency

Buzzing sound

Static sound

Related article: How To Fix Microphone Echo And Latency In Your Computer (7 Methods)

Therefore, some people may recommend purchasing the Microsoft LifeCam HD 3000 alongside a mic or an ear/headphones with a built-in microphone.

The Microsoft LifeCam HD 3000 is designed for users who need an overall good-performance webcam at a competitive and affordable price. These are usually people who need a webcam to conduct simple web calls and not necessarily for work.

For its affordable cost and overall good performance, here is the list of features it has:

Color Correction Feature

720P Resolution

360 Degrees Rotation

Microsoft's TrueColor System Feature

Despite its average-quality features, the Microsoft LifeCam HD 3000 gets the job done. If you do not have any intricate or complicated tasks at hand involving webcams (maybe just for the daily video call with the family), the Microsoft LifeCam HD 3000 is likely the webcam for you.

On The Go: Mevo Start

Due to its being mobile and not being constrained in enclosed environments like most webcams, the Mevo Start has an overall better audio quality than some webcams because it has 3 built-in internal microphones.

While many choose the Razer Kiyo Pro for work-related purposes in the office, the Mevo Start is considered one of the top-line mobile live-streaming webcams. Mobile does not necessarily mean using your phone (although many do), but just the ease of carrying the Mevo Start webcam around with you.

Mevo Start

Below are some of the features the Mevo Start has:

Multiple Audio Options, Including 3 Internal Built-In MEMS Microphone or External 3.5mm Input and USB-C Input

1080P Resolution

Bluetooth or Wifi Connectivity Technology

Smartphone Compatible

Dedicated iOS and Android Mevo Camera App

Live-Editing Features

Over 6 Hours of Built-in Battery Life

Furthermore, the Mevo Start is incredibly popular for people who have professions requiring them to live stream while mobile. These professions include:

Journalists

Streamers (Twitch, Youtube, Facebook)

Vloggers

However, the webcam is not only limited to the professions mentioned above. If you want a top-quality webcam with mobile features, pick up the Mevo Start, as it might be a great choice.

But with the extra features comes extra pricing, making Mevo Start a webcam with a significantly higher price and more expensive than other webcams on the market.

Resolution In 4K: Logitech Brio

Just like most of the higher quality webcams out there, the Logitech Brio double built-in microphone performs a little bit on the above-average level due to its noise-cancelling capability.

However, external audio systems are still recommended when purchasing this webcam.

Logitech Brio Webcam

Although most video call apps, such as Skype, Zoom, or Google, do not support 4K video quality, the Logitech Brio's webcam already has the capability to do so.

With its superior video quality performance, the Logitech Brio is able to show every detail of an image, making it very sharp on its display.

Below are the other great features that the webcam is known for:

Dual Built-In Noise Cancelling Omnidirectional Microphones

Recording and Streaming up to 4K Ultra HD Resolution

1080P Full HD

USB Connection-Powered (Must use USB 3.0 for 4K)

Durable Metal Casing

Built-in Autofocus

5X Zoom-In Feature in Full HD

Auto Light Correction

If you are willing to wait for the video call applications to support 4K and are looking for a webcam capable of 4K HD resolution, then the Logitech Brio is the webcam for you.

Professions That Rely On Webcams With Built-In Microphones

As mentioned, many professions all over the world are digitizing. This evolution means that an increasing number of professions need to rely on tools that give them digital access.

Many professionals who rely on high-quality webcams for their jobs choose webcams include:

Video Game Streamers

Remote Workers

Online Tutors

Job-Provider & Recruiting Agencies

Conclusion: Webcam Audio Capabilities Are Average At Best

Almost all webcams on the market come with a built-in microphone. Although the built-in microphones are great for a webcam's standard, built-in microphones on webcams are subpar or average at best.

You can get much better audio quality with external microphones or earphones with built-in microphones, as they are made precisely for audio-based purposes.

A Note On USB Microphones

For those who are not overly confident with audio, a USB microphone can be a simple and effective solution to improve the audio. USB mics generally sound much better than the built-in microphones of webcams, laptops and cameras.

Many USB mics have automatic driver downloads and are designed to be “plug and play”. This means that users can plug the USB mic into their computer and instantly access improved audio. This is certainly worth considering if the webcam audio is not up to your standard.

The terms “amplifier” and “receiver” are very similar yet distinguishable when it comes to audio/sound systems.

If you're wondering which device would be best for your system or are just curious as to the differences between the two, then you've come to the right place!

What are the differences between an amplifier and a receiver? The main difference between a “regular” integrated amplifier and a receiver regarding sound systems is that a receiver has a built-in radio section, and an amplifier does not. So, then, all receivers are technically amplifiers (with radio functionality), but not all amplifiers are receivers.

In this article, we'll first define what amplifiers are and then look at how receivers build upon the functionality of such amplifiers. We'll wrap up the article by looking at examples of amplifiers and receivers to help solidify our understanding of the difference between the two devices.

What Is An Amplifier?

Let's get started by defining what an amplifier is.

What is an amplifier? An audio amplifier is an electronic device that increases an audio signal's amplitude (power/voltage/current). Amplifiers utilize electric power (from a power supply) to amplify the audio signal by a specified amount of gain (the ratio of output voltage, current, or power to input).

Amplifiers come in a wide variety of forms. They can be designed within various audio equipment types (microphones, hardware processors like equalizers and compressors, active loudspeakers, powered mixers, etc.).

The term amplifier also applies to individual audio components such as operational amplifiers, transistors and vacuum tubes.

They can also be designed and manufactured as standalone units, which is the style we'll focus on today.

There are plenty of ways to categorize amplifiers. For example, we could split them up by class (Class A, Class A-B, Class B, etc.), by the number of channels (monoblock, dual mono, stereo, surround, etc.), and more.

The factor we're most concerned with in this article for standalone amplifiers found in most consumer-grade and audiophile sound systems is that referring to the signal type being amplified.

By that, I mean whether the amplifier is a preamplifier, a power amplifier or an integrated amplifier.

What is a preamplifier? A preamplifier is an amp that amplifies low-level signals up to what is known as line level. Preamps are typically required to bring up a microphone signal, some instrument signals, and/or signals from vinyl records up to line level to properly drive power amplifiers or process and record line-level signals.

What is a power amplifier? A power amplifier is an amp that amplifies line level signals (from a preamp, some electronic instruments or most recorded audio formats) up to speaker level in order to drive loudspeakers properly.

What is an integrated amplifier? An integrated amplifier is a single unit that combines a preamplifier circuit and a power amplifier circuit.

Home sound systems (entertainment systems, home theatres, etc.) will require, at the very least, a power amplifier to drive passive speakers. Many people opt for integrated amplifiers for the additional capabilities of amplifying low-level signals.

However, much of the audio we access today (from streaming, hard drives, CDs, etc.) is already at line level and thereby only requires a power amplifier.

What Is A Receiver?

What is a receiver? In terms of audio/sound systems, a receiver is an electronic device that contains an amplifier (often a stereo-integrated or surround sound integrated amp) and some sort of built-in radio tuner.

Receivers will often have a visual component as well (making them “audio/video receivers” or AVRs). These devices will not only amplify and route audio from various sources. They will also process video signals and route them to their intended displays (television, monitor or video projector, etc.).

Note that Bluetooth is a popular method of transferring audio wirelessly in the modern world of technology. The Bluetooth protocols actually utilize radio waves (at and around 2.4 GHz) to transfer information digitally.

However, when it comes to semantics, if an amplifier has Bluetooth functionality but does not have a regular radio tuner, then it is still labelled an amplifier (and not a receiver).

But this is all just terminology. So long as you read the specs about what a unit does, you'll be able to discern whether it's the right product for your setup! More on that in a moment.

Related article: Top 11 Best AV Receiver Brands In The World

What Should You Choose For Your System?

So, what should you choose for your own sound system? If you want radio capabilities or a single unit for audio and video, you'll need a receiver. Otherwise, I'd suggest opting for an amplifier.

Without any additional circuitry for the radio unit and video hardware, amplifier manufacturers can improve the amp's performance-to-price ratio while also reducing the unit's physical space.

In other words, amplifiers are more “focused” on their task of amplifying audio and will generally perform better than their equally-priced receiver counterparts.

Strictly for audio purposes, you'll likely get a better product in an amplifier. However, it can be nice to have a single unit to take care of your home AV needs, in which case an AV receiver is the logical choice.

Of course, there are many specifications to consider when choosing either an amplifier or a receiver for your speaker setup. These specs include, but are not limited to, the following:

Number of channels (mono, stereo, surround, etc.)

Output impedance

Power rating

Tone control

Does an amplifier improve sound quality? Amplifiers increase the signal level of audio and, when driving transducers (speakers, headphones), increase the perceived loudness of the sound. Amplifiers will have some effect on the quality of the audio signal, and some amplifiers will sound better than others, both subjectively and objectively.

Do loudspeakers need amplifiers? Loudspeakers require amplifiers to be driven properly. Amplifiers will amplify line level (or mic, instrument or phono level) signals to speaker level and convert the audio signal's impedance. The resulting power and impedance of the amplifier output signal can drive the speaker(s) to produce adequate sound levels.
