What Is A Lavalier Microphone?

A lavalier is a miniature microphone designed to be attached to a person and hidden from the visual frame.

Lavaliers may resemble a tiny pendant hence the name “lavalier mic,” and can be attached to the lapel or shirt of the intended speaker hence the alternative name “lapel mic.” Lavs may also be hidden in other parts of the actor's costume, in the performer's hair, or an object in or out of the frame. Clips are generally supplied with lav mics though tape and elastic bands are also common fasteners.

Lavaliers are used in many situations where the microphone either needs to be unobtrusive or needs to be completely hidden while still being able to close-mic and accurately capture the intended person.

These situations include but are not limited to:

  • Theatre and Broadway

The key definition of a lavalier microphone is simply this: a miniature microphone that is easily concealable.

By definition, a lavalier does not have a specific transducer element, though they are often electret condenser microphones with small transformerless JFET impedance converters. These mics are easily powered via DC biasing that is often supplied by their connected wireless transmitters.

That being said, there are dynamic lavs out there on the market, too.


The Factors That Make A Great Lavalier Microphone

Each lavalier microphone model will have its own characteristics.

However, there are some general factors that most great lavalier microphones share in common. They are:

Omnidirectional Polar Pattern

Omnidirectional lavalier microphones are superior to directional lavalier mics for the following reasons:

  • Smaller size: omnidirectional mics work on the pressure principle where only the front side of their diaphragm is open to sound pressure. This makes their designs very compactable. Cardioid mics work on the pressure-gradient principle where both sides of the diaphragm must be open to sound pressure. The rear ports and acoustic labyrinths that allow for the cardioid pattern increase the size of the lav mic.
  • Improved consistency in its sound pickup: a lavalier mic is often attached to the shirt above the chest of the individual so let's use this position as an example. If the individual was to turn his or her head, then, a directional cardioid lav would pickup less level and sound different since the speaker's mouth has changed positions off-axis. An omnidirectional mic, that is equally sensitive to sound from all directions does not have this same issue.

The pro-directional argument is that a cardioid lav has better rejection of non-intended sounds and greater gain-before-feedback in live sound monitoring environments. Though that's true in theory, these pros do not make up for the cons listed above.

Extended High-Frequency Response

Having a microphone with a wide (and preferably flat) frequency response will capture a more natural sound.

I've mentioned an extended high-end response here specifically due to the fact that a lavalier will typically pick up more than enough low-end from being so close to the speaker's chest. The high-end, then, must be clean and defined to really produce a natural-sounding signal.

Small & Lightweight

Size matters, and a smaller lavalier microphone will likely be a better choice, all else being equal because it is easier to conceal.

The weight of the typical lavalier is generally negligible though the weight is a factor worth considering.

Humidity & Temperature Resistant

I would argue that a waterproof and/or sweatproof lavalier is a better purchase than one that isn't. Though the initial gigs with your lavs may be indoors where it is warm and dry, there may very well be a case in the future for sending your lavalier mics out into the freezing weather or even underwater momentarily.

Having a weatherproof lav is a great idea for these reasons.

Versatility

Lavaliers are about as versatile as the places they can be attached to.

When looking for a lavalier microphone, it's nice to have the following options for improved compatibility:

  • Colour: choose a colour that suits the intended application.
  • Output connector: choose an output connector type that will attach to your wireless transmitter(s).
  • Interchangeable cap: by altering the cap/grille of the miniature lav, we can actually change the high-end frequency response to best suit the intended speaker or sound source.

Durability

This goes along with the factor of humidity and temperature resistance. Choosing a lavalier that is built tough is key. These miniature microphones tend to find themselves in relatively harsh situations. They're very small and should be built strong in order to perform at their best over long periods of time.

DPA d:screet CORE 4060

The DPA d:screet CORE 4060 (link to check the price at B&H Photo/Video) is the big brother of the aforementioned 6060. When I say big brother, I mean this microphone was introduced before the 6060 and is significantly bigger than the 6060 as well.

The 4060 utilizes DPA's CORE technology to achieve an exceptional sound with low distortion and noise. The diaphragm is positioned vertically within a 5.4mm diameter electret condenser housing.

This design is referred to as the double vent protection system and makes the 4060 very resistant to humidity, sweat and makeup, though not fully waterproof. Like the 6060, the Kevlar-reinforced cable is capable of withstanding the hard bends and pulls that will inevitably happen over the course of the microphone's usage.

A capsule housing measuring 12.7mm x 5.4mm diameter makes the DPA 4060 easily concealable on a person or in props. The 4 colour options (black, brown, beige and white) further aid in the camouflage of this microphone.

As for connectors, the DPA 4060 can be hardwired by the manufacturer or dealer to connect directly to your wireless transmitter. Alternatively, the DPA 4060 comes with a MicroDot connector and a wide variety of adapters. These adapters are sold separately and are the same as the previously-mentioned DPA 6060. In addition to the adaptability of the connectors and the colour options, the 4060 also comes with two grids that alter the high-end frequency response to best serve the application.

The pre-fitted Soft Boost Grid gives a 3 dB soft boost at 8-20 kHz and yields a natural-sounding signal. This grid is preferred for attaching to a performer’s head and in applications where transparency is important.

The High Boost Grid causes a 10 dB soft boost around 12 kHz for applications where chest placement is preferred. This seemingly high boost helps to improve clarity and counteract the increased low-end boominess that comes with placing a mic in close proximity to someone's chest cavity.

Both grids are made of anodized stainless steel and are scratch-resistant. They can be detached from the microphone and cleaned of sweat, makeup, etc.

I should mention that the DPA 4060 also has a lower price point than the smaller DPA 6060!

Tram TR50

The Tram TR50 (link to check the price at B&H Photo/Video) is a low-profile omnidirectional lavalier microphone with an audio quality that excels in any placement on a person or prop in film/video applications.

  • Polar pattern: omnidirectional
  • Size: .18″ x .300″ x .55″. The TR-50BPS cable is 9 ft. long.
  • Waterproof: No
  • Sensitivity: 20 mV/Pa

The extended frequency response range is relatively flat between 40 Hz – 16 kHz, though it really extends beyond this range. It has a slight boost in the high-end and a gentle roll-off in the low end to best suit the human voice. This is true whether the mic is positioned near the chest, in the hair, or elsewhere on the performer.

The consistent omnidirectional pickup pattern helps the TR50 capture a uniform sound quality even when the performer's head turns. This omnidirectional pattern combined with the miniature size of the microphone makes the TR50 easily positioned and hidden on a person or prop within the visual frame.

To further the concealability of the TR50, the mic is available in black, gray, tan or white.

Although the Tram TR50 is not waterproof, it is certainly strong, durable and reliable outside the water. Its build is rugged and resistant to regular wear and tear that is largely inevitable with wireless lavalier usage.

Like all the microphones on this list, the Tram TR50 is available with a variety of connectors:

  • LEMO (4-pin, 6-pin, or 8-pin)

Although the wireless transmitter (or hardwired microphone preamp) is generally equipped with the necessary voltage to power the Tram TR50, the lavalier mic does have two option power supplies (model number TR79):

  • TR79: negative bias. Operates on internal battery only.
  • TR79+: positive bias. Operates on internal battery or external 12-48V phantom power.

The TR79 models come in a variety of adapter combinations with 3-pin XLR on one end and any of the above-mentioned connections on the other to connect any version of the TR50 effectively.

The hypercardioid polar pattern of the Countryman B2D gives the mic an extra 6-10 dB of headroom compared to a typical omnidirectional lav counterpart. This allows for fewer problems with feedback, ambient noise, room rumble, and phase cancellations with multiple mics.

When attached to glasses, on a headset, or in the hair of a speaker, the directionality of the B2D will benefit the mic signal. The B2D also works well for news broadcasts; attached to the tie or lavalier of an anchor is the anchor does not move their head too much during vocal delivery.

However, the directionality limits the effectiveness of the B2D as an all-around great lavalier microphone. That being said, in the appropriate situations, it's the best directional lav around.

The audio quality of this microphone is clear and transparent on-axis. It rejects much of the sound/noise off-axis.

The B2D is available in five colours: white, light beige, tan, cocoa, and black.

In typical Countryman style, the B2D comes with several sensitivity options:

  • W4 (standard, gray band): 6.0 mV/Pa (-44 dB re 1V/Pa)
  • W5 (mid, red band): 2.0 mV/Pa (-54 dB re 1V/Pa)
  • W6 (low, blue band): 0.7 mV/Pa (-63 dB re 1V/Pa)

Use higher sensitivities when positioning the mic further from the performer's mouth and lower sensitivities when positioning the mic closer to the mouth or near the chest.

Countryman includes an isolation clip with its B2D mic to minimize clothing and vibration noise while allowing 360-degree rotation of the mic for easy positioning. The clips also have five different colour options to match the mic.

Like a few of the other microphones on this list, Countryman offers either a fixed connector of your choice at the end of their B3 or a detachable option with a threaded end and a separate B2D detachable connector.
